It is saddening to note that a man holding such a high office, has compromised the dignity of his position, while addressing a group of students.
A long-standing demand from the people of Thoothukudi, to save the soil, water and air from further contamination caused by Sterlite Corporation, came to an end only after 15 people were killed in a police firing. To call such a tragic massacre as ' foreign funded ' , is indeed an insensitive remark by the Governor.
The Governor of Thamizhnadu is operating like a leader of the opposition, totally oblivious to the fact that a Governor is appointed by the President of India, adhering to the Constitutional values of our country. If the Governor's claims hold any validity, a simple complaint to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs would have sufficed. Instead, he chose to record his claims among a group of students, clearly exhibiting a manipulative disposition and a deliberate attempt to defame the State.
We demand a clarification from the Governor on whether he had taken up the allegation of a 'foreign funded protest' with the Thamizhnadu police and whether he had forwarded his 'concerns' to the Aruna Jagadeesan Commission, which was appointed to investigate the firing.
To present such vindictive allegations to a group of students aspiring to serve the country as civil servants, would result in an entire generation losing faith in fighting for people's rights, thus, collapsing the entire foundation of Democracy.
The Governor should focus on discharging his Constitutional duties , and stop spreading unfounded claims in a public forum.
Makkal Needhi Maiam condemns the Governor's efforts to tarnish people's protest and questions his sensitivity towards the real issues of the people. May we remind him, that his abode is called Raj Bhavan and not 'Ravi Bhavan'?
