Mining at the cost of agricultural lands? Disband coal mining operations, heeding to the voices of farmers.!

29 July 2023

Neyveli Lignite Corporation has acquisitioned agricultural lands around Sethiathope , Cuddalore District, for its 2nd phase of mining expansion.

The villagers have been protesting this move for quite a while now.
In spite of continued protests from the farmers, work has been commenced by digging a drain path for the mine in Valaiyanmadevi.

This has caused major destruction of grains that were ready for harvest. In anticipation of protest from the farmers, police force have been deployed at the drain site. But protests have nevertheless erupted and a few vehicles have been attacked too! it is absolutely heartbreaking to see large destructive equipment's where the paddy fields are in full bloom.

Agricultural lands are so precious that even if you find gold under them, you are wise if you grow food there.

As it is, the farmers are facing multiple issues that remain unsolved over time and they are being pushed out of agriculture. The expanse for growing food is shrinking. It has been a relentless norm of attempts to acquire hundreds of acres of agricultural land for coal mining. Even if it is a public sector company, people should be placed on top priority and if people oppose, the project should be abandoned.

TN government should never support the moves of NLC to acquire agricultural lands.
On any parameter, it is unacceptable.

We do not need any kind of development that comes from destroying the livelihood of our farmers. Let us not hurt those who keep us well fed. Let us respect the sentiments of our farmers and stop destroying agricultural lands. I also lay emphasis on honouring all the requests of those who have already given up their lands.
