Thiru Kamal Haasan, Member of Parliament Raises Voter Inconvenience due to SIR in Tamil Nadu at the Parliament Floor Leaders’ Meeting ahead of the Budget Session 2026.
Good Afternoon,
It is a minute past 2pm sirs. I will skip formalities and move to the point at my earliest. I am proud to address this august body sitting on raised seats granted to us by the citizens of India.
உங்களுக்கு என் சிரம் தாழா வணக்கங்கள்
My opinions, requests, questions, and apprehensions cannot be captured without intruding upon your already busy schedules. Therefore, I shall confine myself to the shortest address my limited vocabulary would permit.
Sir,
SIR’s inconvenience caused to voters must be addressed, not merely by Members of the Lower House or the Upper House alone, but by the Government.
We have raised several questions and received contra-indicative answers. Unfortunately, these answers have not enabled us to convincingly reassure the people of Tamil Nadu.
We have come to realise that this is not a regional issue. It is a national inconvenience, shared by our sister states across the length and breadth of our motherland. Numerous exemplary gratia of voter confusion and distress have been brought to national attention.
I believe, as was taught to me, that I must become the change I wish to see. Hence, I will begin with an example from my own blood relatives and family.
My eldest brother, Mr. Charu Haasan, is now nearly 96 years old and wishes to exercise his right to vote. His father, who was also mine, was only sixteen years older than him, and my elder brother is only fourteen years younger than my mother.
My elder brother is an advocate by profession, capable of arguing and perhaps even winning his right to vote. But what of those who are not as educated, not as informed, not as empowered as he is?
I am Kamal Haasan. As things stand today, my voting rights seem to be intact. If they were ever threatened, my party colleagues would argue, agitate, and advocate on my behalf. But what about the ordinary citizen, those who do not belong to any political party or subscribe to any ideology?
I do not believe that advising citizens to align themselves with a political party merely to safeguard their voting rights is healthy for a democracy. If that becomes the only path available for an Indian citizen to cast vote without fear, then the people of Tamil Nadu place before this body a simple and humble question:
Which party should the common citizen join?
The BJP?
The Congress?
The DMK?
The AIADMK?
The Aam Aadmi Party?
Or any other convenient party, provided it does not stifle or scuttle their freedom to vote?
I could, for selfish reasons, say, “Join Makkal Needhi Maiam.” But my democratic conscience refuses to allow me that indulgence.
I shall continue to protest using time-tested, peaceful tools to defend our rights. History has taught us that any other path begets bloodshed. Enough blood has soaked this land. Now, the time has come to stem the growing discontent among our citizens—an issue more urgent than many others we debate in this gathering.
I have complete faith that our brave and resolute Armed Forces will defend us against threats from beyond our borders.
But we, my respected colleagues, are soldiers entrusted with defending our people within this country. Our sole weapon is the Constitution. We must not allow it to erode, rust, or fracture—whether through misuse, convenient amnesia, or sheer negligence.
This is not a question I raise today but a concern. A concern I place before this gathering as a representative of my people: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and every other linguistic and cultural identity that together form this Republic.
Deliberation alone will not suffice. This must be addressed as an imminent and dangerous threat to our democracy.
Thank you, Sirs.
Jai Hind.
