My unstarred question in Parliament to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs sought to understand how the PM Internship Scheme is performing in Tamil Nadu. The Government's reply shows that the scheme has evolved, but participation and completion must improve.
The PM Internship Scheme is a commendable initiative with the potential to become a meaningful bridge between education and employment. The next phase should focus on outcomes: introduce a mobility and residential stipend for interns placed outside their home district; integrate PMIS with State Skill Missions, universities, ITIs and employment exchanges; incentivise companies based on internship completion and subsequent employment outcomes rather than vacancies posted; and deploy AI-based candidate matching that aligns internships with a young person's qualifications, skills, preferred location and career aspirations.
The measure of success should not be the number of internship offers announced, but the number of young Indians who complete them and confidently transition into long-term employment.
